COMMUNICATIONS IN THE AGE OF TECHNICAL TRACEABILITY

THE ETHICS OF PRESENCE AND SOCIAL PRESENCE TECHNOLOGIES

This half-day workshop, organized by the Human Technology Lab of University of Padova, and Xiwrite, is part of Presence 2008 - the annual conference of the International Society for Presence. Research. The aim of the workshop, which is sponsored by the European PASION project, is to explore the specific ethical issues raised by presence technologies, basing the discussion on concrete “cases” that have arisen in Presence research or during the deployment of Presence technologies.

BLUEPRINT FOR AN ARTIFICIAL CELL - A SUMMER SCHOOL

European Center for Living Technology - Venice May 4-17, 2008

Recent advances in biology, chemistry, computing and engineering have brought us close to the point where it will be possible to build artificial living cells. This was the theme of “Blueprint for an Artificial Cell”, a multidisciplinary summer school, organized by Xiwrite on behalf of the European Center for Living Technology with funding from the European PACE project. The school provided tutorials to familiarize participants with relevant concepts and techniques from outside their own fields of specialization, offering them with an up to date vision of the “state of the art”, exposing them to advanced research, described by leaders in the field, and building awareness of the key research challenges that still need to be answered.
